2.1 Purpose of the abstract 

The application must contain an abstract. The purpose of the abstract is to give brief technical information about the disclosure as contained in the description, claims and any drawings. As such, it cannot be used for the purpose of interpreting the scope of the protection sought. The abstract needs to be drafted so that it constitutes an efficient instrument for searching in the particular technical field and for assessing if it is worth considering the whole content of the application.
