OPENING OF THE SYMPOSIUM AND WELCOMING ADDRESS
Luís Noronha Nascimento
President of the Supreme Court of Justice
Ladies and gentlemen, dear colleagues
Let me briefly bid you all a very warm welcome to this symposium.
At a point in time when most if not all of us believe that the 21st century will be marked by major geopolitical spaces, where legal issues will be by definition global ones, to discuss such subject-matter at the Portuguese Supreme Court is grounds for pride indeed. I'm sure that this will be a very distinguished symposium, especially when, as it so happens, we are celebrating our 177 anniversary tomorrow.
The Portuguese Supreme Court of Justice is a direct consequence of the civil war we had in the 19th Century between liberals and absolutists, and it was Her Majesty the Queen – her portrait is behind me - who created this court.
Therefore it is a great honour for us to be able to welcome you at this point in time and host such a major event. Let me wish you a very successful meeting and let me hope that you'll enjoy your stay and come back to us very often.
Thank you very much.
