These might expand the limits of human knowledge and deserve publication in scientific journals, but they are too abstract to be patentable.

If your discovery can be used in some concrete way – for example you discover a microbe that could be used to break down plastics, or you come up with the mathematical formula used to guide a rocket – then practical applications that rely on your discovery may be patentable.
