Recipes in which known foodstuffs are combined or mixed often don’t merit patent protection. But innovative ways to produce foods and drinks, including machinery and processes, could be patentable, even if the resulting products taste conventional.

Don’t overlook the benefits of keeping innovations as trade secrets, rather than filing a patent application, which is then published for everyone to read. Some of the most valuable food and drink brands have been built on secrets and trade marks.
