TV recording studio

TV content creators are constantly looking for new show formats or ways to re-imagine existing ones. However, unlike the script for a play or film, such concepts are too intangible to be protected by copyright. TV and radio show formats are not patentable either.

Nevertheless, TV stations will monetise successful show formats by syndicating them to networks in other countries. They do this by building a brand identity around the show’s characteristic elements – logos, catchphrases, jingles, etc. – and licensing this package as registered and unregistered trade marks.

Creators are advised to share their ideas for new show formats with TV producers only if confidentiality agreements are in place.
