Machine parts

Components for devices, apparatus, instruments, gadgets and tools

Any new component for a mechanical or digital device could be patentable. Your patent application should explain how it differs from previous parts. For example, the component may be more durable, more efficient or otherwise functionally “better” because of new and non-obvious technical features.

If it only works in combination with existing technologies patented by other people, there could be licensing issues to resolve.

Beware – if the part is to fit in an existing machine which is covered by a patent that is still in force, its owner may have the right to prevent others from repairing it, or to prohibit the supply and fitting of spare parts. How courts interpret the repair of patented articles, can vary depending on the details of the case.
