Software and apps

Many “computer-implemented inventions” are patentable – whether their effects are external, such as in an AI system that controls traffic lights according to changing demand, or internal, as is the case for a program that monitors data volumes and available bandwidth, rerouting data flows in response to demand. Increasingly sensors are gathering data to be analysed by computers that autonomously take decisions based on preset parameters – for example: “When sensors detect high blood sugar above a set level, administer x mg of insulin to patient”. This is the fourth industrial revolution, which is enabled by autonomous, connected, smart devices.
