affymax_award.jpg The European Patent Office and the European Commission's DG Enterprise are looking for Europe's most promising or pioneering inventors to compete for the title of "European Inventor of the Year 2009".

The two bodies have been presenting this award to inventors who have made a significant contribution to innovation in Europe each year since 2006.

In previous years the inventors considered for the title were proposed by examiners at the EPO and in the national patent offices in the member states.

Now, for the first time ever, the organisers are calling on industry, scientists, patent attorneys, SMEs, patent examiners, researchers, students and the public to enter inventors for the award.

To enter an inventor in the competition you need to fill out our entry form, providing information about the inventor and why you believe they deserve the title of European Inventor of the Year.

Inventions from any technological field will be considered, provided they meet the following conditions:

  • The invention is protected by a European patent granted before 1 January 2004 (EP B1); and
  • There are no opposition proceedings pending.

group_small.jpgThe entries will be checked by a panel of EPO experts to make sure that they meet the award criteria, before a shortlist is passed on to a high-profile international jury, comprising entrepreneurs, managers, scientists, investors and journalists.

The jury will nominate three inventors in each category in March, before finally selecting the winners.

The European Inventors of the Year 2009 will be announced at a gala awards ceremony at Prague Castle on 28 April 2009.
